Steamworks vs. Ore House: The Durango Dinner Debate

Ask any Durango local where to eat dinner and two names come up immediately: Steamworks Brewing and the Ore House. Both are institutions. Both are excellent. But they're very different experiences. Here's the breakdown.

Steamworks Brewing Co.

The vibe: Lively, casual, brewery atmosphere. Exposed brick, big wooden bar, the hum of conversation and clinking glasses. This is where you go when you want good food, good beer, and a good time without dressing up.

The food: The menu is broad — burgers, fish tacos, cajun boil, pizza, salads. Nothing is going to win a Michelin star, but everything is solid and satisfying. The cajun boil is a local favorite.

The beer: Brewed in-house and consistently good. The rotating taps mean there's always something new to try alongside the staples.

Best for: Families, groups, casual nights out, post-hike dinners, anyone who wants beer with their meal.

The Ore House

The vibe: Upscale mountain steakhouse. Darker, quieter, more intimate. White tablecloths but not stuffy — it still feels like Durango.

The food: Steak is the main event, and they do it well. Prime cuts, perfectly cooked, with classic sides. The seafood is also good — the salmon and the shrimp are worth trying.

The beer/wine: Full bar with a solid wine list. This is more of a cocktail-and-wine spot than a beer spot.

Best for: Date nights, celebrations, anyone who wants a proper sit-down steak dinner.

The Verdict

They're both great — it just depends on what you're after. Want casual and fun? Steamworks. Want a special dinner? Ore House. The real pro move is to do both during your trip.
