Oscar's Cafe and East by Southwest: Durango Brunch Battle
Durango has a lot of good food, but for breakfast and brunch, two spots come up over and over: Oscar's Cafe and East by Southwest. They're very different, and both are worth your time.
Oscar's Cafe
Oscar's is the classic Durango breakfast joint. The huevos rancheros are legendary — smothered in green chile, with beans and rice, and enough food to fuel a full day of skiing or hiking. The breakfast burritos are massive. The coffee is strong.
The vibe is diner-meets-mountain-town. Casual, friendly, and consistently busy. You might wait for a table on weekend mornings, but it moves fast.
East by Southwest
East by Southwest is best known for dinner (sushi, Asian fusion), but their brunch game is strong. The menu is more creative and eclectic — think global flavors and unexpected combinations. The cocktail menu adds a boozy brunch dimension that Oscar's doesn't offer.
The vibe is more polished — dimmer lighting, nicer décor, and a more curated experience.
The Verdict
Want a hearty, no-frills breakfast that'll power you through a day of outdoor adventure? Oscar's. Want a leisurely, creative brunch with drinks? East by Southwest. The real move is to do Oscar's one morning and East by Southwest another.
Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
