Thanksgiving in Durango is a great call. The fall colors might be fading, but the mountains might have their first snow dusting, the town is quiet and cozy, and you can actually enjoy a holiday without the stress of hosting.

Dining

Several Durango restaurants offer Thanksgiving dinners with all the trimmings. The Ore House, Steamworks Brewing, and a few other downtown spots typically put together special holiday menus. Reservations are essential — these fill up well in advance.

If you'd rather cook at home (or at your rental), the local grocery stores have everything you need. There's something genuinely nice about cooking Thanksgiving dinner in a mountain townhome with snow on the ground outside.

What to Do

Hike. A Thanksgiving morning hike is a great tradition to start. Animas Mountain gives you a solid workout with views of Durango below. Dress warm — November mornings are cold.

Explore. Downtown Durango on Thanksgiving weekend is quiet and pleasant. Small businesses do Black Friday sales, but without the chaos you'd find in a city.

Early season skiing. If Purgatory has opened for the season (typically late November), you might be able to get a few turns in on Thanksgiving weekend. Check the resort for opening day announcements.

The Vibe

Thanksgiving in Durango feels like what the holiday is supposed to be — quiet, grateful, surrounded by beauty. No traffic, no mall parking lots, just mountains, good food, and time to slow down.

Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
