Fall in Durango is gorgeous, but it'll test your packing skills. Morning temperatures can be in the 20s, afternoon highs in the 60s, and then a freak snowstorm blows through overnight. The key is layers and versatility.

The Must-Haves

A good down or synthetic puffy jacket. This is your workhorse. Warm for cold mornings, packable for afternoon warmth, and works as a mid-layer if conditions get serious.

A waterproof shell. Fall storms can bring rain, snow, or a mix. A lightweight waterproof layer that packs small is worth its weight.

Warm hat and gloves. Mornings at higher elevations are cold. You'll be glad to have these for early hikes or fall-color drives.

Hiking boots. Trails can be muddy, icy, or dry depending on the day. Waterproof boots with good ankle support are the safest choice.

For the Car

Sunglasses. The fall sun at altitude is bright, especially when reflecting off golden aspens.

A blanket and thermos. For spontaneous roadside picnics during fall color drives. Hot coffee, a blanket, and a view of golden aspens — that's peak fall.

What You Probably Don't Need

Shorts (maybe for one warm afternoon, but pants are the default). Sandals (it's boot season). Heavy winter gear unless you're hiking above treeline.

The Temperature Reality

Durango in October: morning lows in the mid-20s to 30s, afternoon highs in the 50s to mid-60s. At Purgatory (8,793 feet base), subtract about 10 degrees from town temperatures. Higher elevations get colder still.

Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
