Summer in Durango is beautiful, but the conditions are more complex than you might expect. High altitude plus mountain weather means you need to pack smart.

The Essentials

Layers. Morning temperatures in the 40s and 50s, afternoon highs in the 70s and 80s, and a potential thunderstorm dropping temps 20 degrees by 3 PM. A light jacket or fleece is essential even in July.

Rain gear. Afternoon thunderstorms are a near-daily occurrence in July and August. A packable rain jacket saves the day when the sky opens up.

Sun protection. Hat, sunglasses, SPF 50 sunscreen. At 6,500 feet (Durango) to 10,000+ feet (Purgatory), the UV is significantly more intense.

Hiking boots or trail shoes. If you're hiking — and you should be — proper footwear matters. Rocky trails, creek crossings, and the occasional mud patch demand more than sneakers.

Swimsuit. For hot springs, river floats, and lake days.

Nice to Have

A daypack for hikes. Water bottles (hydration is critical at altitude). Bug spray for dusk and dawn. A warm hat for chilly mornings.

What to Skip

Heavy winter gear (unless you're hiking above treeline). Heels or dress shoes. Anything you can't get dirty.

Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
