Fall Foliage 2025: Peak Color Predictions for Durango
Fall colors in the San Juan Mountains are one of nature's best shows, and 2025 should be no exception. Here's how to time your visit for peak color.
The Timeline
Fall color near Durango typically follows this pattern: highest elevations (above 10,000 feet) turn first in mid-September. Color works downward over the next two to three weeks. Durango itself (6,500 feet) usually hits peak in early to mid-October.
The last week of September through the first week of October is the sweet spot for catching color at multiple elevations.
Best Drives
US-550 to Silverton: The classic. Aspens line the road from Purgatory to Coal Bank Pass, and the entire corridor is ablaze in late September.
Lime Creek Road: Between Purgatory and Coal Bank Pass, this Forest Service road tunnels through aspen groves. It's narrow and winding — take it slow.
La Plata Canyon / Kennebec Pass: The aspens in La Plata Canyon are incredibly dense. The drive is less trafficked than US-550.
Best Hikes
Hermosa Creek Trail is beautiful with golden aspens lining the creek. The Colorado Trail from Molas Pass shows color across the alpine meadows. Purgatory Flats Trail has aspens mixed with evergreens for nice contrast.
Tips
Follow local fall color reports for real-time updates. Overcast days make colors pop in photos. Weekdays are dramatically less crowded than weekends on the popular drives.
Our townhome Timberline is right across from Purgatory — three bedrooms, a hot tub, a fireplace, and a free shuttle to the lift.
