The Alpine Slide at Purgatory: Everything You Need to Know
The alpine slide at Purgatory is one of those activities that sounds simple — sit on a wheeled sled, ride down a concrete track on the mountainside — but in practice it's an absolute blast.
How It Works
You ride a chairlift partway up the mountain, then slide down a winding concrete track on a small wheeled sled. A hand lever controls your speed — pull back to brake, push forward to let it rip. The track has banked turns, straightaways, and enough speed to get your heart rate up.
Is It Safe?
Yes. The track is well-maintained, the braking system is effective, and the speed is manageable. Kids as young as 3 can ride with an adult, and kids 6 and up can typically ride solo (check current age and height requirements). That said, you can go fast enough to make it exciting for adults too.
Tips
Go in the morning for shorter lines. Wear closed-toe shoes. Long pants are recommended — the sled edges can scrape bare legs. Bring sunscreen for the chairlift ride up.
Don't ride the brakes the whole way down — half the fun is building speed on the straightaways. But do slow down for the turns, especially the first time.
The Full Package
The base area also has mini golf, a bungee trampoline, and a climbing wall. Buy a combo pass for the best value if you're planning to do multiple activities.
Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
