Best Beginner Runs at Purgatory Resort
If you're learning to ski or bringing someone who is, Purgatory is a great place to start. The mountain is less intimidating than the big resorts, the staff is friendly, and the beginner terrain is well-designed.
The Learning Area
Purgatory's dedicated learning area near the base is where everyone starts. It's separate from the main traffic, so you're not dodging experienced skiers while you figure out how to pizza and french fry. A magic carpet (conveyor belt) takes you up a gentle slope for your first runs.
Moving Up
Once you're comfortable on the bunny slope, the beginner chair serves a set of longer green runs. These are wider, gently pitched, and groomed smooth. They give you enough length to practice turning, stopping, and building rhythm without anything too steep or narrow.
The Ski School
Purgatory's ski school offers lessons for all ages and levels. Group lessons are affordable, and private lessons give you dedicated one-on-one attention. For first-timers, a lesson is the fastest way to learn properly. The instructors are patient and know the mountain well.
Tips for First-Timers
Rent your gear at the resort or in Durango — trying to buy equipment before your first trip is unnecessary. Dress warmly but in layers (you'll warm up fast once you're moving). Take breaks. Eat lunch. Don't push through fatigue — that's when falls happen.
The Big Picture
Most beginners can progress from the bunny slope to green runs in a single day, and from greens to easy blues within a few days. Purgatory's gradual terrain makes that progression feel natural.
Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
