Purgatory Flats Trail: The Easiest Epic Hike Near the Resort
Not every hike needs to be a suffer-fest. Purgatory Flats Trail is proof that easy hikes can be just as beautiful as the hard ones — and it starts right near the resort.
The Trail
Purgatory Flats Trail follows Cascade Creek through a lush valley of spruce and aspen trees. The trail is mostly flat (hence the name), well-maintained, and shaded for much of its length. It's about 2.5 miles one way, making a five-mile round trip that most people can handle comfortably.
Why It's Great
The creek is the star. Cascade Creek runs alongside the trail, and in summer it's clear, cold, and perfect for wading. Kids will want to throw rocks in the water (let them). The forest is dense and cool, which is a welcome break on hot summer days.
Wildflowers bloom along the trail in July and August — columbines, lupines, and paintbrush add color to the green corridor.
Good for Families
This is one of the best family hikes near Purgatory. The flat terrain means even younger kids can handle it, and there are plenty of natural stopping points along the creek for snack breaks and rock-throwing sessions. You don't have to do the whole thing — even a mile in and back is rewarding.
Getting There
The trailhead is accessible from the Purgatory Resort area. Check at the resort for current trail conditions and directions to the parking area.
Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
