Animas Mountain is the hike that every Durango local has done a hundred times, and there's good reason. It's right in town, offers legitimate views of the Animas Valley and the La Plata Mountains, and gives you a real workout in under two hours.

The Trail

The main trailhead is on the north end of Durango, easily accessible from downtown. The trail climbs about 1,300 feet over roughly 3 miles to the summit ridge. It's a steady climb through scrub oak, piñon, and juniper — nothing technical, but you'll feel it in your legs.

The Views

From the top, you get a panoramic view of Durango below, the Animas River winding through the valley, and the snow-capped La Plata Mountains to the west. On a clear day, you can see north toward the San Juans. It's the kind of view that makes you understand why people live here.

When to Go

Animas Mountain is hikeable year-round, though it can be icy in winter and muddy in spring. Early morning is best in summer to avoid the heat. Fall is gorgeous with the scrub oak turning red and orange.

Tips

Bring water — the trail is exposed with little shade. Rattlesnakes are present in warmer months, so watch your step. Dogs are allowed but should be leashed. The trail is well-marked and well-maintained.

Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
