Ouray Hot Springs: The Perfect Fall Day Trip
Here's the perfect fall day trip from Durango: drive the Million Dollar Highway through peak fall colors, soak in the Ouray Hot Springs, then drive back as the sun sets over the mountains.
The Drive Up
Take US-550 north from Durango. In early October, the aspens along this route are at or near peak color. The 70-mile drive to Ouray takes about two hours, but stop at every pullout — the views with golden aspens and snow-dusted peaks are ridiculous.
The Soak
Ouray Hot Springs Pool is a municipal pool fed by natural hot springs. Several sections range from warm to hot. The setting — a box canyon surrounded by towering peaks — makes this one of the most scenic hot springs in Colorado.
After a morning of driving and walking around, sliding into hot mineral water is profoundly relaxing. Bring a towel, sunscreen, and water to stay hydrated.
Ouray Itself
Walk the main street for coffee, lunch, and browsing. Ouray is tiny but charming. Check out Box Canyon Falls if time allows — a short walk to a dramatic waterfall.
The Drive Back
The return drive catches the afternoon and evening light on the mountains. If you time it right, you'll hit golden hour somewhere around Red Mountain Pass, and the red-stained mountains glow in a way that's almost surreal.
Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
