Music in the Mountains: Durango's Summer Concert Series
Every summer from late June through early August, Durango hosts Music in the Mountains — a festival that brings professional musicians from around the country to perform in one of the most beautiful settings you'll find anywhere.
What Is It?
Music in the Mountains is a multi-week concert series featuring orchestral, chamber, and contemporary performances. The musicians are top-tier — many come from major symphony orchestras and conservatories. The concerts range from full orchestral programs to intimate chamber music evenings.
The Venue
Performances happen at various venues around Durango, but the marquee concerts are outdoors with the San Juan Mountains as a backdrop. Imagine listening to Beethoven while watching the sun set behind 13,000-foot peaks. It's genuinely special.
Not Just Classical
While classical is the core, the festival includes a range of programming. Jazz nights, family concerts, and contemporary compositions keep things varied. You don't need to be a classical music buff to enjoy it.
Planning Your Visit
Concerts run multiple nights per week throughout the festival period. Check the schedule online and grab tickets in advance for popular performances. Many concerts are affordable, and some free events are sprinkled in.
Pair a concert evening with dinner in Durango — the Ore House or East by Southwest make great pre-show dinner spots.
