Fall Mountain Biking in Durango: Best Season Best Trails

Ask any Durango mountain biker their favorite season, and most will say fall without hesitation. The temperatures are perfect, the trails are dry, the crowds thin out, and the aspens turn the singletrack into golden corridors.

Why Fall Rides Best

Summer's monsoon moisture is gone. The trails are dry and fast — that hard-packed Colorado singletrack that rolls like pavement. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s mean you can ride hard without overheating. And the light — the fall light in the mountains is warm and golden and makes everything look better.

Top Trails

Horse Gulch — Durango's backyard trail network. Miles of interconnected singletrack with technical options and flowy options. All accessible from town.

Hermosa Creek — A longer ride through aspen groves and along the creek. In fall, this trail is stunning.

Raider Ridge — More technical with rocky sections and good climbing. Rewarding views from the ridgeline.

Purgatory Bike Park

The bike park may still be operating in September (check dates). If it is, lift-served downhill through fall colors is an experience.

Tips

Days are shorter — start rides earlier and bring lights as backup. Layers are key; mornings can be cold, but you'll warm up quickly. Carry extra water — the dry fall air dehydrates you fast.

Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
