Family-Friendly Bike Trails in Durango
Durango is a cycling town, but you don't need to be racing the Iron Horse to enjoy it. There are plenty of flat, paved, and scenic bike trails that work for families with kids of all ages.
Animas River Trail
This paved trail runs along the Animas River through town. It's flat, well-maintained, and connects parks, playgrounds, and downtown Durango. You can ride as little or as much as you want, with plenty of stops along the way. It's the best option for young riders.
The Recreation Path
Durango's bike path system extends beyond the riverwalk into residential areas. The paths are paved and separated from car traffic, making them safe for kids.
Purgatory Flats Trail
While primarily a hiking trail, Purgatory Flats is also bikeable and offers a gentle, forested ride along Cascade Creek. It's not paved, so it's better suited for mountain bikes or wider tires.
Renting Bikes
Several Durango bike shops rent cruisers, kids' bikes, trailers, and trail-a-bikes. Get fitted for the right size, grab helmets, and you're good to go.
Tips
Start early before afternoon heat and thunderstorms. Bring water and snacks. Stick to the shaded riverside trails on hot days. And remember — Durango is at 6,500 feet, so everyone will tire out faster than expected.
Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
