Fourth of July in Durango: Fireworks, Parades, and Mountains
The Fourth of July in Durango is everything a mountain town celebration should be. Small-town charm, genuine patriotism, and fireworks exploding over the San Juan Mountains.
The Parade
Durango's Fourth of July parade rolls down Main Avenue in the morning and it's a classic — fire trucks, marching bands, local businesses on floats, kids on bikes. Grab a spot on the sidewalk early. It's the kind of parade where you know half the people walking by, even if you've never been here before.
The Fireworks
The main event. Durango shoots fireworks from a spot visible from multiple vantage points around town. The mountains as a backdrop make these fireworks hit different than your typical flat-ground display. Find a spot along the Animas River or on higher ground for the best views.
The Day
Between parade and fireworks, the day is yours. Hike Animas Mountain for a morning workout. Float the river. Ride the Durango & Silverton Railroad (book well in advance for holiday weekends). Hit Steamworks for a burger and a beer. Browse the shops on Main Avenue.
Tips
Book lodging early. Fourth of July week is one of Durango's busiest, and everything fills up. Restaurants will have waits, so make reservations where you can. Be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms — they're common in July and usually pass quickly.
