Durango Bluegrass Meltdown: Tunes and Trails
Every April, Durango hosts the Bluegrass Meltdown — a weekend of flat-picking, fiddle-sawing, banjo-rolling live music that takes over multiple venues around town.
What to Expect
The Meltdown typically runs over a long weekend in April with a mix of national touring acts and regional bluegrass talent. Shows are spread across several downtown venues, so you'll be walking between spots — part of the charm is hearing music spill out of doorways along Main Avenue.
The Venues
Downtown venues are intimate, meaning you're close to the performers. The Henry Strater Theatre hosts some headliners. Bars and restaurants around town host smaller acts, and spontaneous jam sessions pop up on street corners.
Beyond the Music
April in Durango means spring is arriving — snow melting, Animas River rising, days getting longer. It's a perfect shoulder-season weekend: catch music, hike a trail, grab dinner at East by Southwest or Steamworks Brewing.
If there's still snow on the mountain, Purgatory might be open for late-season skiing. Morning spring turns followed by evening bluegrass is a hard combo to beat.
Our townhome Timberline is right across from Purgatory — three bedrooms, a hot tub, a fireplace, and a free shuttle to the lift.
Getting Tickets
Tickets usually go on sale a couple months before the festival. Individual show tickets and weekend passes are both available. Check the festival's website for the current lineup.
