Getting Ready for Winter in Durango: Trip Planning Guide
A winter trip to Durango and Purgatory takes a little more planning than a summer visit, but the payoff — skiing, snow, hot tubs, and cozy mountain vibes — is enormous.
When to Come
The ski season typically runs late November through early April. December and January are peak season with the coldest temps and holiday crowds. February is often the sweet spot — deep snow, fewer crowds. March brings spring skiing — warmer, longer days, softer snow.
Getting Here
Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) has flights from major hubs. The drive from Albuquerque is about 4 hours; from Denver, about 6.5 hours. Winter driving on mountain passes requires preparation — see our EV and winter road trip guides.
What to Book
Lodging fills up early for holidays (Christmas, New Year's, MLK weekend, Presidents' Day). Book months in advance for these periods. Lift tickets can be purchased in advance through Purgatory's website, often at a discount.
What to Bring
Ski gear (or plan to rent in Durango). Warm layers for off-mountain. A swimsuit for the hot tub. Sunscreen (yes, in winter). See our full winter packing list for details.
The Big Picture
A winter trip to Purgatory gives you everything the big Colorado resorts offer — excellent skiing, great dining, mountain beauty — without the big-resort prices and crowds.
Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
