Vallecito Lake: Durango's Hidden Swimming Hole
Vallecito Lake is one of those places that doesn't show up on most tourist radars, which is exactly why locals love it. It's a mountain reservoir about 30 minutes northeast of Durango, surrounded by national forest, and it's perfect for a summer day away from the crowds.
Getting There
Take Florida Road (County Road 240) east from Durango. The drive is scenic — you'll follow the Florida River through ranch country with the La Plata Mountains in the distance. The lake appears after about 18 miles.
On the Water
Vallecito Lake is big enough for serious boating but calm enough for paddleboarding and kayaking. Rentals are available at the marina for pontoon boats, kayaks, and SUPs. The water is cold — this is a mountain lake fed by snowmelt — but on a hot summer day, it feels incredible.
Swimming isn't officially designated at a beach, but people wade and swim from various shoreline spots. Find a spot, lay down a towel, and enjoy.
Fishing
Vallecito is stocked with rainbow trout and also has pike and brown trout. Shore fishing is accessible from multiple points around the lake, and boat fishing lets you access deeper water.
Camping and Hiking
Several campgrounds ring the lake if you want to make it an overnight trip. Hiking trails head into the Weminuche Wilderness from the north end of the lake — the Pine River Trail is a popular starting point for backcountry trips.
The Vibe
Vallecito feels like summer camp. Pine trees, mountain air, cold water, and no cell service in most spots. Bring a book, a cooler, and a willingness to unplug for a few hours.
