Telluride is about two and a half hours from Durango, and while that's a long day trip, it's worth every mile — especially in fall. The drive alone is worth the trip, and the town itself is one of the prettiest places in Colorado.

The Drive

There are two main routes. The northern route goes through Silverton on US-550 and over to Telluride via CO-145. This route passes over some of the highest paved passes in Colorado and puts you right in the middle of fall colors. The southern route goes through Cortez on US-160 and up CO-145 through the Dolores River canyon — also beautiful, and quicker.

In fall, take the northern route if weather permits. The colors along the Million Dollar Highway are at their peak in late September and early October.

In Telluride

The town sits at the end of a box canyon at 8,750 feet. The free gondola connects the town to Mountain Village and provides incredible views — ride it up and back just for the scenery.

Walk Colorado Avenue (the main street) for shops, galleries, and coffee. For lunch, try one of the local spots — there are excellent restaurants for a small town.

The Free Gondola

Seriously, it's free. And the views of the box canyon, Bridal Veil Falls, and the surrounding peaks are world-class. In fall, the aspens on the mountainsides glow gold and the contrast with the dark spruce is stunning.

Tips

Check road conditions before taking the northern route in late fall — early snow can close the high passes. Start early to maximize your time in Telluride. Gas up in Durango before you leave.

Our townhome Timberline is right across from Purgatory — three bedrooms, a hot tub, a fireplace, and a free shuttle to the lift.
