Sunsets at altitude hit different. The thin air, the mountain silhouettes, and the way the light paints the sky in colors that don't seem real — Durango delivers some of the best sunsets in Colorado.

Top Spots

Animas Mountain — hike to the summit ridge and watch the sun set behind the La Plata Mountains. The elevation gives you an unobstructed western view. Time it for about 30 minutes before sunset and hike down in the fading light.

Purgatory Resort area — the west-facing slopes near the resort catch beautiful evening light. The ridgelines turn orange, then pink, then purple.

Molas Pass — if you're willing to make the 45-minute drive from Durango, Molas Pass (10,910 feet) offers 360-degree views. Sunset up here, with the Grenadier Range silhouetted against the sky, is unforgettable.

The riverwalk downtown — for a no-effort option, the Animas River reflects the sunset colors and the combination of water, bridges, and mountains makes for great photos.

Tips

Bring layers. Temperatures drop fast after sunset at altitude. A headlamp or phone flashlight is essential if you're on a trail. And put the phone down for at least a few minutes — some sunsets deserve to be experienced, not just photographed.

Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
