Spring Skiing at Purgatory: Why March Is the Sweet Spot

There's a reason locals call March the sweet spot at Purgatory Resort. The days are longer, the sun is warmer, and the snow — thanks to Colorado's famous spring storm cycle — keeps coming.

Why March Skiing Hits Different

By mid-March, Purgatory's 1,600 acres are fully covered. All 100+ runs and 8 lifts are typically spinning, and the base depth is often at its deepest of the season. But the real magic is the vibe. Gone are the holiday crowds. Lift lines shrink. You can rip laps on Hades, duck into the trees off Legends, and still make it back for a 2 PM lunch without feeling rushed.

The temperatures are friendlier too. Highs in the 30s and 40s at the base (8,793 feet) mean you can ditch the heavy parka and ski in a shell. Morning groomers are firm and fast, and by afternoon the south-facing slopes soften into buttery corn snow.

What to Know Before You Go

Spring conditions mean temperature swings. The mountain can go from bluebird to a surprise six-inch dump overnight — and those March storms drop some of the wettest, heaviest snow of the season. Keep an eye on the forecast and be ready to pivot.

Sunscreen is non-negotiable. At 10,822 feet (Purgatory's summit), the UV is intense. Bring SPF 50 and reapply at lunch. Lip balm with SPF too.

The Après Scene

After a day on the mountain, Steamworks Brewing downtown has solid pub food and a rotating tap list. If you want something more upscale, the Ore House does a great steak. Either way, you're only 25 minutes from the resort to Main Avenue.

Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.

The Bottom Line

If you can swing a mid-March trip, do it. Fewer people, better weather, deep snow, and the mountain practically to yourself.
