Snowdown 2026: Durango's Craziest Winter Festival
Snowdown 2026 is approaching, and Durango is getting ready to lose its collective mind for five straight days. If you haven't experienced Snowdown, this is the year.
What to Expect
Five days of themed events, costumes, competitions, and community celebration. Each year gets a new theme that drives everything — from parade float designs to bar party themes to the elaborate costumes locals spend months creating.
The Events
The Light Parade is the crown jewel — illuminated floats rolling down a darkened Main Avenue while crowds line both sides. It's beautiful and worth braving the January cold.
The Cardboard Classic remains the funniest event — homemade cardboard sleds racing down a snowy hill. The engineering ranges from brilliant to catastrophic.
Bars, restaurants, and venues throughout downtown host themed parties, trivia nights, live music, and costume contests every night of the festival.
Pair with Skiing
Ski Purgatory during the day. Drive the 25 minutes to downtown Durango for Snowdown at night. It's the ultimate winter double feature.
Tips
Bring a costume — even a simple one. Snowdown is a participation event, and costumes are expected. Book lodging early; Snowdown draws visitors from around the region. Check the festival website for the 2026 theme, schedule, and event details.
Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
