Skiing with Kids at Purgatory: Everything You Need to Know
Purgatory is genuinely one of the best ski resorts for families. The mountain is manageable, the vibe is welcoming, and the infrastructure for kids is solid without being corporate-feeling.
Ski School
Purgatory's ski school takes kids from age 3 and up. The programs are well-run with small group sizes and instructors who are patient and encouraging. Full-day and half-day options let you structure the day around your family's energy levels.
Drop-off and pickup are straightforward at the base area. Many parents ski while the kids are in lessons, then meet up for afternoon runs together.
The Right Terrain
Purgatory's beginner and intermediate terrain is perfect for kids learning to ski. The runs are wide, the pitch is gradual, and the mountain layout makes it easy to keep track of where everyone is. As kids progress, there's plenty of terrain to grow into.
The Logistics
Rent gear at the resort or in Durango — kid gear is widely available and saves you from hauling it. Pack extra snacks (kids burn through calories fast at altitude and in the cold). Take breaks. An exhausted kid on a ski slope is nobody's idea of fun.
Beyond the Slopes
The shuttle back to the townhome is kid-friendly. Hot tub time is a great reward after a morning of lessons. If you need a no-ski day, Durango has the Discovery Museum, the train depot, and playgrounds along the Animas River Trail.
Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
