White Water Rafting the Animas: Your Complete Guide
The Animas River runs 126 miles from Silverton to New Mexico, and the section through Durango offers some of the best commercially rafted whitewater in Colorado.
The Sections
The Upper Animas above Durango is serious whitewater — Class IV and V rapids through a remote canyon. This is for experienced paddlers and those booking with expert outfitters who run this section.
The Durango section is the sweet spot for most visitors. Class II-III rapids give you enough excitement to get the adrenaline going without requiring whitewater experience. This is what the half-day commercial trips typically run.
The Lower Animas below town mellows out and is suitable for tubing and casual floating later in the summer.
When to Go
Rafting season runs roughly May through September. Peak flows (and biggest rapids) hit in late May to mid-June during snowmelt. July and August flows are lower but still great for rafting. Water temperature warms up as summer progresses.
Booking a Trip
Several Durango outfitters run daily raft trips. Half-day trips (2-3 hours on the water) are the most popular. Full-day trips cover more river. All reputable outfitters provide gear, safety briefings, and experienced guides. No experience needed for the standard commercial sections.
What to Expect
You'll get wet. Dress in layers that can get soaked — synthetic materials dry fast, cotton doesn't. Secure your sunglasses. Sunscreen before you get on the water. And bring a change of clothes for after.
Our townhome Basecamp sleeps eight, has a hot tub and pool table, and is right across from the resort with a free shuttle to the lift.
