Durango was founded in 1880 as a railroad town, and over 140 years of history have left their mark — including, if the stories are to be believed, a few ghosts.

The Strater Hotel

The Strater Hotel, built in 1887, is Durango's most famous haunted spot. The hotel's Victorian elegance comes with reports of unexplained footsteps, doors opening on their own, and guests feeling presences in certain rooms. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the hotel is a beautiful piece of history worth visiting.

Ghost Tours

Durango ghost tours run during the fall season, taking groups through downtown and sharing the stories of the town's more colorful — and sometimes tragic — past. Mining accidents, frontier justice, and Victorian-era drama provide plenty of material.

The Mining History

The San Juan Mountains were one of the most productive mining regions in the American West. The boom-and-bust cycle left behind ghost towns, abandoned mines, and stories of miners who never made it home. Silverton, just up the highway, has its own collection of haunted tales.

Halloween Atmosphere

Durango in October has a natural spooky atmosphere. The Victorian architecture, the narrow streets, the old railroad, and the mountain fog that sometimes settles over town — it all adds up. Even without a formal ghost tour, walking downtown on a chilly October evening feels appropriately atmospheric.

Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
