When the snow starts melting in the San Juans, all that water goes into the Animas River — and the Animas runs right through the heart of Durango.

What's Happening on the Water

Kayaking and river surfing pick up as flows rise. Smelter Rapids and Santa Rita Park both have standing waves that attract paddlers from all over. Even if you don't paddle, it's worth stopping on the riverwalk to watch river surfers carving waves in the middle of town.

Rafting season typically kicks off in May. Several local outfitters run trips ranging from mild family floats to aggressive whitewater. Peak flows usually hit late May to mid-June.

Fishing gets going as water warms and spring hatches begin. The Animas is a gold-medal trout fishery. Local fly shops can point you to the best sections and current hatches.

Riverside Walks

The Animas River Trail follows the river through Durango, connecting parks, playgrounds, and downtown. In spring, the snowmelt turns it into a genuinely impressive flow.

The Riverwalk

Durango's riverwalk area downtown is a great spot to grab coffee and watch the river roll by. It's right near Oscar's Cafe and Zia Taqueria.

Both of our Purgatory townhomes — Basecamp and Timberline — are right across from the resort with hot tubs, EV chargers, and free shuttle access.
